Apple users could be in for a shock with the latest Apple iOS update, as many apps are apparently incompatible. Beta users of the iOS 11 update found a little warning dialog box pop up when they opened some of their apps. It said: “This app will not work with future versions of iOS”, instead of the older dialog box that read: “This app may slow down your iPhone.”

This dialogue box is appearing because Apple are refusing to support 32 bit apps anymore. When the iPhone 5 came out in 2013, Apple began supporting 64 bit code. However, it was not a requirement for developers to use the 63 bit code back then. This means that there are still apps on the app store that haven’t been updated for the last two or so that still run on the 32 bit code.
Now it seems that instead of naming and shaming app developers, Apple are just eliminating their apps when people update to the new iOS 11. The “app bloat” that occurs in the App Store when games aren’t updated doesn’t benefit Apple, which is why they’re choosing to remove the apps.
It’s rumoured that a staggering 187,000 apps will be impacted, according to SensorTower. The category that will be impacted the most will be games, followed by education.
Although many game developers can update their games and make sure that people can play them on the latest update, there is a question of whether or not it will be worth it for developers to take away time from their current projects to update their apps. For some app developers, it’s not financially viable.
So, it’s time to check if your favourite apps need an update and rejoice if they’ve updated.
