In case you thought we all couldn’t get any lazier, Nike has proved us all wrong by releasing their first ever self-lacing shoe. The HyperAdapt 1.0 was unveiled at the Nike Innovation Summit and Nike are calling the concept “adaptive-lacing”.
You should be able to simplify your life with these self-lacing shoes as early as the end of the year. Nike senior innovator, Tiffany Beers said, “When you step in, your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten.” “Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it’s perfect.” The soles of the sneakers contain batteries that are recharged wirelessly by induction.
The possibilities with this technology are endless. Designer Tinker Hatfield is already discussing the potential for a shoe in the future to be able to sense when you need to have it tighter or looser. “That’s where we’re headed. In the future, product will come alive.”
He said the shoes are “not a gimmick” and could eventually be used by basketballers and other athletes who spend quite a bit of time tightening their laces. The adaptive-lacing that will launch by the end of the year will be a manually controlled feature but Nike hopes for it to be automatic to assist those wearing the shoes.
