A floating McDonald’s restaurant known as McBarge that was abandoned in Canada is finally getting a well overdue makeover. The ship was originally built in 1986 costing about $12 million. It was purposely constructed for the World Fair Expo in Vancouver but in 1991 was towed from False Creek to Burrard Inlet where it was abandoned. 2016 celebrates the 30th anniversary of Expo 86 making it the perfect time to bring the ship back to life.
Developer and owner of McBarge, Howard Meakin is investing a whopping $4.5 million to revive the ship and offer a totally unique experience. In December, Meakin told Vancouver Sun, “It will be restored and refitted. It could be in Vancouver, but it could be in other places as well. We’re not saying exactly where it’s going to be located, but the plan is that it will undergo extensive renovations.”
Plans are on the hush and it is uncertain whether or not McDonald’s will once again be served. Either way, as long as there’s food or beverages of some sort, most people probably won’t be complaining.
