Late in the afternoon yesterday, news sources arrived with results that Malcolm Turnbull will remain as our Prime Minister. With 80% counted, the national Liberal party is sitting at 75 seats and Bill Shorten’s Labour party lost by 9 seats to the coalition.
Earlier this morning Mr Turnbull stated “this is a great day today” after hearing about the news from his opposition, Bill Shorten who conceded defeat.

Then this afternoon, Mr Shorten offered to work together to find a ‘common ground’ and make the parliament work as he says “Australia deserves nothing less than a functioning government.”
The government dropped tax rates to 27% this financial year that just started, which would start to apply by 2023-24 dropping to 25% after three years. The government are showing they could secure a 27.5% rate for businesses with a turnover of $10 million per year with Nick Xenephon and his team supporting his policies.
The Coalition wanted to extend the freeze on Medicare and remove the bulk-billing for scans and pathology patients. Most of Australia, including many politicians have disagreed with this policy and oppose the freeze. Treasurer Scott Morrison said: “It can’t be a choice between a budget … and your health responsibilities… we can’t have the health system being a money pit where the argument is just about how much money you throw down the hole.”
Mr Turnbull wants to hold another national vote on legalising gay marriage as it is such a controversial area which many Australians are interested in, the politicians decision will not be used. However, the Greens and Labour party both support gay marriage and want a vote inside Parliament as they think this will move the issue along the right path.
