TAKING OVER TUMBALONG PARK, DARLING HARBOUR FROM 15-22 OCTOBER 

Sydney, NSW – 18 September 2023: SXSW Sydney is thrilled to invite everyone to get a taste of what the globally-renowned event has to offer via a series of free activities in the heart of Darling Harbour’s Tumbalong Park. From 15-22 October, Tumbalong Park will be transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity and innovation, featuring captivating events to ignite the imagination, inspire and entertain. 

The free activities offer the chance to experience mind boggling tech and futuristic fun, from unleashing your creativity in a world of augmented reality at Snapchat House to using drone technology to drive full-sized Rovers on the other side of the country.  

This futuristic playground is your chance to dip your toes into SXSW Sydney and enjoy Sydney’s dynamic creative industries in action. Free events range from live music performances, interactive brand activations and tech demos to live gameplay, conference speakers, radio broadcasts and much more. 

Programming highlights are noted below, with the full schedule to be announced in early October.   

Minister for Jobs and Tourism, Minister for the Arts and Minister for Music and the Night-time Economy, John Graham says: “SXSW Sydney will be a unique event that celebrates the ability to wander from place to place, a roving festival offering activations to enjoy along with other members of this creative community – it will be an experience that people are going to love. If you’re not on board by now, you’ve got a month to get on board to celebrate the incredible creative people and places we have here in Sydney.” 

SXSW Sydney Chair, Geoff Jones says, “We are delighted to be sharing SXSW Sydney with the whole city and to provide a glimpse into the future of technology, music, ideas and gaming with all the action that will take place at Tumbalong Park.” 

SXSW Sydney is also pleased to announce The Daily Telegraph as Presenting Partner of the Tumbalong Park Stage. Editor, Ben English said, “At The Daily Telegraph we’re for a vibrant and exciting Sydney. And that’s exactly what SXSW Sydney will create for a week in October. We hope to see all Sydneysiders – and visitors to our great state – enjoying for free the best in show content, be it screenings, bands, presentations or live radio shows, on the Tumbalong Park Stage presented by The Daily Telegraph – elevating Sydney’s reputation as the southern hemisphere’s home of innovation and creativity.” 

SXSW Sydney also wishes to acknowledge the City of Sydney’s support this inaugural event, specifically around bringing the events free programming in Tumbalong Park to life.

Key Information 

TECH DEMOS:  

Immerse yourself in the world of cutting-edge technology with captivating demos and activations. Discover and embrace the limitless possibilities of technology. 

Highlights include:  

Advanced Navigation – Cloud Ground Control 

  • Robotics platform Cloud Ground Control, developed by the brilliant minds at Advanced Navigation, is about to unleash an exhilarating experience at SXSW Sydney. Audience members will have the opportunity to remote control robotic vehicles and drones stationed in different states, all from the SXSW Sydney Tumbalong Park Stage.  

Augmented Reality Demo – Jigspace 

  • Come and see a Formula 1 Car in 3D Augmented Reality! What if you could imagine anything … and have it appear right there in front of you? That is Augmented Reality. With VR you visit another world, but with AR the world comes to you. Spend some time with the masters of Australian AR, JigSpace, and experience it for yourself at SXSW Sydney. 

JMC Academy: Tech Showcase 

  • Witness the convergence of technology and live performance as audience members’ responses to gestures of kindness made by JMC Academy’s acting students are caught by our roaming cameras and projected on the large screen for all to share.  
  • For the camera-shy, audience members can prompt a Generative Artificial Intelligence tool to transform the projections into surprising and heartfelt portraits. 
  • All the while, artists will grace the lunchtime stage with summertime vibes and dancing tunes. 

UTS: Rocketry Team, Rover Team and Motor Sports Electric FSAW Team 

  • UTS Motorsports Electric team is proud to reveal its 2023 electric and autonomous cars. 
  • Experience the future of driving, as imagined by a 70-strong team of UTS students from the faculties of engineering, design, business, science and communication. 
  • UTS Rover team and UTS Rocketry Team will also be activating in Tumbalong Park! 

LIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCES:  

New and established artists come together to form a diverse line-up, from celebrated local legends to international rising stars from around the world. 

Highlights include:  

Touchdown Under YEG Showcase, 18 and 19 October 

  • A diverse group of talent from Asia to the Middle East, from operatic metal to Indonesian folk to Korean R&B, each band a true star in their own country, now ready to take on the world.  
  • Presented by China’s most loved music festival, Concrete & Grass, and Asia’s biggest label group, YEG Music.

Young Henrys Rock n Roll Circus 

  • The beloved Sydney brewery are bringing their Rock & Roll Circus to SXSW Sydney, featuring secret acts covering iconic rock songs. 

Breaking New Ground, presented by QMS 

  • Breaking, one of the four elements of Hip Hop born in 1970s New York, is set to debut as the most highly anticipated new sport in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games 
  • Gain an insight into cypher culture from the AUS Breaking Crew, ahead of the Oceania Olympic qualifying event, in this Q&A and battle – join the movement!  

JMC Academy Student Performances 

  • Vocalists, bands, singer/songwriters will grace the lunchtime stage with springtime vibes and dancing tunes.  

CONFERENCE SPEAKERS, LIVE ON THE TUMBALONG PARK STAGE:

  • A live cooking class live in celebration of World Food Day. Join Chef Martin Yan and food illustrator Yiying Lu as they explore how the universal languages of food and art transcend linguistic barriers, nurture bodies and minds, foster friendships and bring joy.

Uber Advertising 

  • Advertising by Uber is bringing back Uber’s “Bar in a Car” at SXSW Sydney, where festival-goers, marketers, and advertisers can enjoy a beverage or two, relax between sessions and learn how brands can use Uber to reach their audience as consumers go anywhere and get anything. 

LIVE RADIO SHOWS:  

Witness live radio broadcasts from some influential voices in music and culture. Get up close and personal with your favorite podcast hosts as they bring their shows to life.

FBi Broadcast: Arvos with Jamiee Taylor-Nielson Live from Tumbalong Park 

  • Since 2003, FBi Radio has been a catalyst for generational change in Sydney’s cultural life, passionately championing music, arts and culture.   
  • For SXSW Sydney, FBi Radio will be broadcasting Arvos with Jamiee Taylor-Nielsen live from Tumbalong Park. 

Accessing SXSW Sydney – Badges and Wristbands: 

While all activity listed above can be enjoyed for free, for a deeper SXSW Sydney experience, badges and wristbands are available.  

Badges are your master key for SXSW Sydney – they open the doors to all activity across the week-long event, from its Conference and Tech & Innovation Expo to its Music, Screen and Games Festivals.  

For example, as they are conference speakers, it is only possible to see the talks by Chance The Rapper and Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker with a badge.  

Wristbands give access to SXSW Sydney’s Music, Screen or Games festivals, for performances, screenings and showcases.  

Music Festival: 300 performances in 25 venues over 4 nights.   

Screen Festival: unlimited screenings over one week. 

Games Festival: 150 new indie games and parties over 6 nights.  

For example, access to the world premiere screening of documentary Hot Potato: The Story of The Wiggles is only available with a badge or Screen Festival wristband.
